Clyst Action Group exists to stop the proposed 1,750-home development that would permanently destroy the Clyst Valley’s landscape, overwhelm our local infrastructure, and erase the historic separation between Clyst St George and Clyst St Mary. We are a community-led movement standing together to protect our villages, our countryside, and our way of life. This development is not a natural extension of our parishes — it is a brand-new settlement imposed on rural land that cannot support it. We believe in sustainable, sensible solutions to housing needs, but concreting over precious green fields, flood-risk areas, and vital wildlife corridors is not one of them. Our goal is simple: protect the Clyst Valley now, before it’s lost forever.
It is all too easy to dismiss this all as NIMBYism.....it is NOT. We are all well aware that homes need to be built in the East Devon and Exeter area. We are blessed with miles and miles of fields and brownfield sites, where houses could be built without impacting historic villages or creating intense infrastructure issues. We are broadly in agreement with the proposed new development of Marlcombe because it has minimal impact for maximum return.
This development between Clyst St Mary and Clyst St George is the total opposite. Make no bones about it this development isn't about extra homes it is 100% about GREED. By connecting to these 2 small historic Devon villages the developers know this can be marketed much easier and they can maximise the prices!! And dont be fooled into thinking this is just some local landowners and farmers selling this land....this land has been bought a few years ago by London entrepreneurs looking to make a quick buck at the expense of Devon. This land and history will be lost to concrete forever, it can never be returned.
